# `/month-end-review`Check the month before you explain it.

A free, read-only Claude Code skill for US startups on QuickBooks Online and Stripe.

It ties out cash, cards, AR/AP, Stripe and payroll, finds duplicate, missing and late bills, checks accruals, prepaids and deferred revenue, and flags wrong accounts and financing booked as revenue. Only then does it compute cash, burn and runway and write your variance commentary, with every number traced to the rows it came from.

## What you get each month.

One folder per month, on your machine.

| File | What's in it |
| --------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| review.md | The verdict, each item that needs you ranked by dollar impact with its source rows and the fix, tie-outs, P&L (month, budget, year to date), balance sheet, metrics, commentary, questions for the owner, and draft entries. |
| investor-update.md | A numbers table written by the script (cash, burn, runway, revenue, MRR, margin), plus notes in plain words. Every number is checked. |
| results.json and CSVs | Exceptions, tie-outs, P&L flux, balance-sheet flux, draft entries, and uncleared items carried to next month. |

## The checks.

In this order. If the gate fails, nothing else runs.

| Group | What it checks |
| ------------------ | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Gate** | Everything required is here, for the right dates, in the right shape, adds up (trial balance, every transaction, history vs P&L, statements, Stripe), and isn’t empty. Otherwise it stops. |
| **Tie-outs** | Cash and cards vs statements · AR/AP aging and receivables hygiene · Stripe payouts and the clearing account · Stripe fees, refunds, sales and tax vs the books · payroll, accruals included. |
| **Completeness** | Duplicates, and bills paid twice · missing recurring bills · cutoff and accruals · prepaids, deferred revenue, annual plans · missing monthly entries, loan interest · one vendor under two names (“Home Depot” and “The Home Depot #4521”). |
| **Classification** | Wrong account, suspense, impossible signs · accounts unusual against their own history · financing booked as revenue · transfers between your own accounts booked as income or expense · payroll split between cost of sales and operating expenses. |
| **Variance** | P&L flux · balance-sheet flux · cash, burn, runway, MRR · commentary, verified. |

## Rules it never bends.

So you can trust the numbers it hands you.

| Rule | What it means |
| -------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Right before explained** | Tie-outs come first and commentary comes last. If the month doesn’t add up, there is no commentary. |
| **Every number traces back** | Scripts do the math and each figure links to the rows it came from. Claude only writes words, and a verifier rejects any number the scripts didn’t compute. |
| **Missing input means stop** | Missing, wrong dates, wrong shape, doesn’t add up, or empty: the run stops and says exactly what to fetch. It never guesses or estimates. |
| **The checks decide, a person clears** | Exceptions come only from the scripts. Claude can’t drop or soften one. Clearing an item or posting an entry is always a person’s call. |
| **Read-only** | Nothing is posted, voided or edited in QuickBooks or Stripe. Draft entries are proposals for a person. |

## What it needs.

Your own keys stay in a file on your machine. They never go into the chat.

| Input | How |
| --------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **QuickBooks Online** | Your own Intuit developer app’s Client ID and Client Secret, pasted into month-end/.env (never the chat), then one sign-in in the browser. Real companies need Intuit’s production keys. |
| **Stripe** | A restricted read-only key, or CSV exports plus the month’s balances. |
| **Banks and cards** | A CSV for each, plus the statement balance. The first month also needs the opening balance and last month’s uncleared items. |
| **Optional** | A payroll export (with pay-period dates, for the accrual check), a budget, and, if part of payroll belongs in cost of sales, the share you expect there. |
| **Your machine** | Python 3.10 or later. No packages to install. |

## Common questions.

Found a bug or a check it should run? Open an issue on [GitHub](https://github.com/nocodetalks/finance-skills) or email ankur@nocodetalks.co.

Does it post anything to QuickBooks?

No. It reads QuickBooks and Stripe and writes files on your machine. Draft entries are proposals; a person decides whether to post them.

Who is it for?

US startups on QuickBooks Online and Stripe, and the bookkeepers, accountants and fractional CFOs who close their books.

What doesn’t it cover?

Categorizing bank feeds, tax filings and 1099s, multi-entity books and intercompany, foreign currency, and matching Stripe charge by charge. It also leaves the call on whether a card charge was personal to a person, and says so.

Does it work outside Claude Code?

The skill folder follows the Agent Skills format, so you can copy it into another agent’s skills folder.

What does it cost?

Nothing. It is MIT licensed. If you want it set up on your books, or extended to your checklist, that is paid work.

## Want it set up on your books?

I can connect it to your QuickBooks and Stripe, add the checks from your own close checklist, and run it with your team.
