_A decision guide for CPA firms and bookkeepers._ Intuit's connector runs in Claude and ChatGPT, Meridian posts journal entries across companies, and one skill file works in three AI tools. What to use, how to set it up, what to allow.

## The short answer

Start with Intuit's official QuickBooks connector, in Claude or ChatGPT, for reports, A/R and invoices on one US company, with writes set to Needs approval. Add a skill (Intuit's, Anthropic's or your own SKILL.md) when a task must run the same way every month. Reach for Meridian or Intuit's open-source MCP server only for journal entries or many companies, and a custom API integration only for unattended sync.

## Start here: you may not need any of them

Many searches for **quickbooks mcp** start from a job QuickBooks or a simple import already handles. Check these first.

- **A standard report?** Run it in QuickBooks.
- **A monthly data load?** Have Claude or ChatGPT write a QuickBooks import file for Settings, then Import data, and check it before you import.
- **Questions and invoices for one US company?** Intuit's connector, set up in a few clicks.
- **Two systems that must stay in sync on their own?** An App Store app or Zapier/Make first, then a [custom integration](https://www.nocodetalks.co/blog/quickbooks-api-integration-with-claude-code).

## Claude skills vs MCP vs a custom API, in plain terms

**MCP** (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard for connecting AI apps to other systems. An MCP server offers tools, such as "get profit and loss" or "create invoice". Claude calls an MCP server a connector. ChatGPT now packages them as plugins.

**A skill** is a folder with a SKILL.md file of instructions, plus optional scripts and templates. The AI loads it only when a task matches, and scripts run as code, so the same input gives the same output. Claude, ChatGPT, Codex and Copilot in Excel all read the same SKILL.md format.

Anthropic's short version: MCP gives Claude access to data, and skills tell it what to do with that data. **A custom API integration** is ordinary code that calls QuickBooks on a schedule, with no AI unless you add it.

## QuickBooks MCP options as of October 2026

| Option | Made by | What it can change | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| QuickBooks connector (Claude) and plugin (ChatGPT) | Intuit | Invoices and estimates (create, update, send, delete), customers, products, payment links, transaction imports, new employees and base pay. 74 tools in Claude | US only. No journal entry, bill or general ledger tools. One company per connection in an October 6 test |
| Meridian Connector for QuickBooks | Pilot.com, a third party, in Claude and ChatGPT | Journal entries, bills, bill payments, deposits, expenses, attachments, bulk invoices. 63 tools | Several companies, each read-only or read-write. Has delete tools. Vet the vendor |
| QuickBooks Online MCP server (open source) | Intuit, on GitHub (about 410 stars) | Create, update and delete on 29 record types, including journal entries and bills, plus 11 reports | Runs on your computer with your own Intuit developer app, one company per setup |
| Xero connector and plugin | Xero | Nothing. Read-only in Claude and ChatGPT | Xero's open-source MCP server can write |
| NetSuite connector | Oracle | Creates and updates records the role allows | Administrator roles aren't supported |

## Claude finance skills to start from

| Skill pack | Made by | What's in it |
|---|---|---|
| QuickBooks plugin (intuit-quickbooks) | Intuit, in Anthropic's official plugin directory | 10 skills on top of the connector: business health check, chase overdue invoices, email to estimate or invoice, payroll help and changes. Write skills confirm first. The ChatGPT plugin bundles similar skills |
| Finance plugin | Anthropic (knowledge-work-plugins, about 27,000 stars) | /journal-entry, /reconciliation, /income-statement, /variance-analysis, /sox-testing. You bring the ERP connector |
| Small-business plugin | Anthropic (same repo) | 44 skills, including close-month, invoice-chase, ap-processor and cash-flow-snapshot. Works from exports when nothing is connected, with approval gates before anything is sent or posted |
| Claude for Financial Services | Anthropic (about 39,000 stars) | GL Reconciler and Month-End Closer agents. Built for larger finance teams. Outputs are staged for sign-off and never post to a ledger |
| Vendor skills | Ramp (24 skills), Stripe, Oracle NetSuite | Each pairs with that vendor's connector |

> Note: Star counts mean little for new vendor repos. Intuit's plugin repo, created in September 2026, shows almost none and is still the official one.

## How to connect Claude to QuickBooks, route by route

**Route 1: Intuit's connector.**

1. In Claude, open Customize, then Connectors, search QuickBooks, click Connect, sign in to Intuit and pick the company.
2. In ChatGPT, open Settings, then Plugins, find Intuit QuickBooks, install it and review permissions. Your plan and workspace admin settings decide whether it's available.
3. Set tool permissions (next section) before the first chat, then run the self-audit prompt below.

Prompt for Any AI chat · Connector self-audit:

```
Before we start: list every QuickBooks tool you can use in this chat. Group them as read-only, create or update, send, and delete. For each write tool, say what it changes and whether it asks me first. Then name the company file you're connected to.
Don't call any write tool in this chat. If a tool description doesn't tell you something, say so instead of guessing.
```

**Route 2: Meridian.** Add it from Claude's connector directory or ChatGPT's plugins and connect with Intuit. Choose read-only or read-write for each company. Hector Garcia, CPA, disconnected Intuit's connector first so only one QuickBooks connector was active and the model wouldn't mix them up.

**Route 3: Intuit's open-source server in Claude Code.** Create an Intuit developer app and sandbox (steps in the [build guide](https://www.nocodetalks.co/blog/quickbooks-api-integration-with-claude-code)). Clone the repo, run `npm install` and `npm run build`, set the three `DISABLE` flags to `true`, run `npm run auth` to sign in, and add the server to Claude Code's MCP settings.

**Route 4: Skills.** In Cowork, install plugins from claude.com/plugins. In Claude Code, run `claude plugin marketplace add anthropics/knowledge-work-plugins`, then `claude plugin install finance@knowledge-work-plugins`. Your own skills go in `.claude/skills/` for Claude Code, `.agents/skills/` for Codex, and a OneDrive skills folder for Copilot in Excel (English only). Ramp's skills install with `npx skills add ramp-public/skills`.

Prompt for Claude · Turn this month's run into a skill:

```
We just did [the overdue A/R follow-up list] for [client]. Write a SKILL.md so next month runs the same way: a name, one line on when to use it, the inputs it needs, the exact steps and checks we used, and the output format.
Add a rule that nothing is sent or posted without my approval. Put client-specific values in a separate reference file. List anything from today you weren't sure belongs in the skill.
```

## Permission settings: what to allow

In Claude, open Customize, then Connectors, choose the connector and review Tool permissions. Tools are grouped by type, and each can be set to **Always allow**, **Needs approval** or **Blocked**.

| Tools | Where I'd start |
|---|---|
| Reports and lookups (read-only) | Always allow |
| Create, update or send: invoices, estimates, customers, payment links | Needs approval |
| Delete tools, transaction imports, payroll changes | Blocked until you need them, then Needs approval |
| Meridian | Read-only for every company; read-write only for the one you're working on |
| Intuit's open-source server | `QUICKBOOKS_DISABLE_WRITE`, `_UPDATE` and `_DELETE` set to `true` |

On Team and Enterprise plans, an owner must turn connectors on first. Allowing a tool in Claude doesn't grant QuickBooks rights the user doesn't already have.

## Check the output

Prompt for Claude · First-session tie-out:

```
Using the QuickBooks connector, pull the profit and loss and balance sheet for [company name] for [period]. Show total income, total expenses, net income, total assets, total liabilities and equity in a table, with the report and date range each figure came from. Don't round. I'll compare them with the same reports in QuickBooks. Flag any figure you calculated rather than read directly.
```

- On the first connection, compare the numbers with QuickBooks, as Garcia does before trusting any connector.
- After any write, open a sample of records and check QuickBooks' audit history. In Garcia's test it kept the original invoice and the AI's edit.
- Ask for a list of everything created, with links that open each record in QuickBooks.
- Don't accept "done" without counts, accounts and totals.
- Watch transfers and card payments. They were miscategorized in most connector tests on video.

## Where it fails

> I have 4 businesses and Claude can’t pick a business.
> — a commenter on a QuickBooks connector review on YouTube (2026) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=goCwSJ1Xfg0)

What people report
- Connectors work at the company-file level, not the accountant login where a firm's clients live, and read-only access is the bare minimum. (an accounting-firm coach on YouTube (September 2026), https://youtu.be/KhxsxcFlp8w?t=40)
- Intuit's import couldn't choose the bank account, didn't create payees, and put a transfer to savings in commissions and fees after warning it might be wrong. (a CPA testing the connector on YouTube (October 2026), https://youtu.be/aGyhYW0TQmE?t=1032)
- Deposits from an imported statement were posted to returns and allowances, and Claude had no tool to recategorize them. The fix had to happen in QuickBooks. (an accountant reviewing the connector on YouTube; the channel promotes its firm (April 2026), https://youtu.be/goCwSJ1Xfg0?t=543)
- A commenter said accounting work with no audit trail has little value. (a commenter on r/Accounting (August 2026), https://www.reddit.com/r/Accounting/comments/1vve0ap/how_have_you_and_your_teams_utilized_claude_in/)

Before installing a community MCP server, commenters on r/ClaudeAI suggest checking when it was last updated and breaking it on purpose, with a revoked token or a missing record, to see whether its errors make sense.

## Which should your firm use?

| Your situation | Start with |
|---|---|
| A standard report or a monthly CSV load | QuickBooks itself: its reports, or an import file Claude writes and you check |
| Questions, A/R and invoices for one US client | Intuit's connector. Reads on Always allow, writes on Needs approval |
| The same month-end task for 30 clients | A skill that writes import files and a tie-out, with a person reviewing |
| Journal entries, bills or several companies from chat | Meridian, read-only by default, after a vendor review. Or Intuit's open-source server with your own app |
| A firm outside the US | The connector is US-only. Work from exports with a skill, or run Intuit's open-source server |
| Data that must move every hour, unattended | A [custom API integration](https://www.nocodetalks.co/blog/quickbooks-api-integration-with-claude-code) with logs and reconciliation |
| Xero or NetSuite clients | Xero's connector for reading. Oracle's NetSuite connector with a narrow role, plus Oracle's NetSuite plugins |

## Data safety

Connectors read live client books. Use a business plan, one client per session, and approvals on every write. Anthropic warns that servers pulling outside content can carry prompt injection, so keep a write-capable QuickBooks connector out of sessions that browse the web. Since October 6, 2026, new Cowork tasks on Pro and Max run in Anthropic's cloud; for local-only work, Anthropic points to Claude Code. More in [Is Claude safe for client data?](https://www.nocodetalks.co/blog/is-claude-safe-for-client-data) and the [Section 7216 guide](https://www.nocodetalks.co/blog/irs-section-7216-ai-client-consent).

## Common questions

**Is there an official QuickBooks MCP server?**

Yes, two. Intuit runs the hosted QuickBooks connector in Claude and ChatGPT for US customers. Intuit also publishes an open-source QuickBooks Online MCP server on GitHub that you run with your own Intuit developer app.

**What's the difference between Claude skills and MCP?**

MCP gives the AI tools to reach a system like QuickBooks. A skill gives it instructions, scripts and templates for a task. A skill can call MCP tools, and Intuit, Oracle and Anthropic ship them together.

**Can Claude post journal entries to QuickBooks?**

Not through Intuit's connector as of October 7, 2026; it has no journal entry tool. Meridian and Intuit's open-source server can. A skill can also write a CSV for QuickBooks' own journal entry import, which a person checks first.

**Can one connector handle several client companies?**

Intuit's connector linked one company per connection in a CPA's October 6, 2026 test, and Intuit's help article doesn't cover switching. Meridian connects several companies, each set to read-only or read-write.

**Do Claude skills work in ChatGPT and Copilot?**

The SKILL.md format is shared. ChatGPT uses @ to call a skill, Codex uses $, and Copilot in Excel reads skills from a OneDrive folder, in English only. Results still differ by tool, so test each one.
